In this exercise we had lab instructions to help us work through the basics in symbology and labels for the first part of the lab. We utilized the label properties to aid in design and placement on a map. We had selected readings in Cartography by Kenneth Field and various articles and videos. Many factors go into creating a good map and you always have to keep the end user or audience in mind. We went over all the essential map elements and how to fine tune them to create good flow and easy to interpret map.
Afterwards, we had to put all our newly acquired knowledge and skills to customize a simple map of Florida. I chose to go with the less is more principle and keep it clean and uncluttered. I centered the state and tried to place the legend, scale, north bar, title and credit information in the open areas to create good flow and balance.
On the map layout I added a light off-white background instead of the stark white default. I made several customizations to the map itself as well. I chose two complimentary fonts that I felt were crisp and easy to read for this particular map. I also used color customization and transparency feature to make the map easy to interpret visually.
Here is the result.
